FMT : Meeting on foreign worker levy ends with no decision

Date Posted : 16 February 2016

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry held a meeting with industry players here today to discuss the foreign worker levy and the exercise to re-employ illegal immigrants.

According to those who attended the meeting with Home Ministry’s secretary-general Alwi Ibrahim, no major decision was made and another meeting was being planned at the end of the month.

Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary-general Dr A T Kumararajah said industry players would be coming back for another meeting to find a workable solution.

About 50 industry players attended the meeting at the Home Ministry here.

Kumararajah said the Home Ministry had been sympathetic and empathetic with the needs of the industry.

“The number of illegal workers presently in the country needs to be identified before the government brings in new foreign workers.

“That way we can have the number of how many (more foreign workers) we actually need. The foreign worker issue is market driven. If they enter (the country), this means I need them.”

SME Association of Malaysia president Michael Kang said no major decision was made during the two-hour discussion.
